Understanding JPEGs, PDFs, and PNG files

PDF (Portable Document Format), JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group), and PNG (Portable Network Graphics) are all popular file formats used for different purposes. Here are the main differences between them:

PDFs are best for documents that need to be viewed or printed exactly as they were created,

JPEGs are ideal for photographs and images with complex color gradients.

PNGs are commonly used for images that require transparency, such as logos, icons, and graphics with sharp edges.
  1. PDF (Portable Document Format):
    • PDFs are versatile and widely used for sharing documents that need to be viewed or printed exactly as they were intended, regardless of the software, hardware, or operating system being used.
    • They can contain text, images, vector graphics, and other elements.
    • PDFs can be created from various sources, including word processors, desktop publishing software, and scanning documents.
    • PDFs are typically larger in file size compared to JPEG and PNG files, especially if they contain high-quality images or complex graphics.
  2. JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group):
    • JPEGs are primarily used for photographs and images with complex color gradients, such as digital photographs.
    • They use lossy compression, which means that some image data is lost during compression to reduce file size. This can result in a slight loss of image quality, especially with high levels of compression.
    • JPEGs support millions of colors and are well-suited for displaying photographic images on the web or in print.
    • They are not suitable for images with sharp edges or text, as compression artifacts can be noticeable in these cases.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics):
  • PNGs are commonly used for images that require transparency, such as logos, icons, and graphics with sharp edges.
  • They use lossless compression, which means that no image data is lost during compression. This results in higher image quality but also larger file sizes compared to JPEGs.
  • PNGs support millions of colors and offer better compression for images with sharp edges or text compared to JPEGs.
  • They support transparency and alpha channels, allowing for transparent backgrounds and layering of images.
  • PNGs are widely used for web graphics, digital art, and images that require high-quality reproduction.

For the moment, SchedulePop documents must be converted into JPEG or PNG files.  We will soon have the ability to upload PDFs.
For now JPEG and PNG will serve your needs well.
