What is a Split Shift?

What is a split shift?

A split shift is a work schedule in which an employee's workday is divided into two or more parts. The regular one-hour lunch break associated with a 9-to-5 schedule does not count toward a split shift. A typical split shift is separated by two or more hours.

For example, a restaurant server might be scheduled to work from 10am to 2pm (to cover the lunch rush) and again from 6pm to 10pm (to cover the dinner service). Even though the employee's workday spanned a 12-hour period, they only worked eight hours with a four-hour break in between.

Who creates a split shift?

Only the manager can initiate a split shift. An employee may leave for emergency or personal reasons (with the manager's permission, of course) and then return to finish work, but that is not a split shift. The split shift must be initiated by the manager and recorded as such on the master schedule. In many jurisdictions, the employee must actually leave the premises during the time between shifts to make the split valid.

How do I create a split shift?

To create a split shift in SchedulePop from an existing shift, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Staff View.
  2. Find the shift that needs to be split. It will be found as either as an already assigned shift or as an existing shift in the drop down when creating a new shift for that staff member.
  3. Open the shift.
  4. Change the end time to the desired new time.
  5. Add the second part of the shift by creating a new shift with the new start and end time.
  6. If you know who will pick up the second half of the shift, go to staff view and assign that staff member to the shiftS.
  7. Go back to Shift View and change the open quantity of the shift so it does not release an open shift of the "full shift."
  8. Publish the updated schedule for those employees that have had changes made to their schedules.
